Software for electronic medical records is in great demand, as is software for medical image analysis and diagnosis, and software for clinical trial management systems.

The tech industry is partnering with hospitals and university medical centers to develop this much-needed software.

Our report on “Industry Trends in Healthcare Software” describes how companies and universities are collaborating to develop software for EMR/EHR (electronic medical records/ electronic health records), and software for medical image analysis and diagnosis, and clinical trial management.

The IBM Watson Health partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center is described, which explores how to use AI to improve EHR usability, among other topics.

Universities are bringing a great deal of value to healthcare software, not only in terms of research, but in terms of opportunities to test new products in a medical setting.

Another collaboration described in the report is Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) partnership with GE Healthcare using AI to develop tailored immunotherapy for cancer patients. After analyzing the immunotherapy responses of thousands of cancer patients using their medical imaging data, the researchers will then develop AI-powered apps that help physicians identify each patient’s most suitable treatment.

Healthcare software is a heterogeneous industry. Both the corporate world and academia will benefit from long-term cooperation in the field.

Clinical Trial Management Systems Research is also benefiting from a university – corporate collaboration. A project in China with the Peking University Clinical Research Institute (PUCRI) and Medidata will accelerate drug development and operational efficiency among Chinese drug makers.

Our report highlights how the corporate world and academia will benefit from long-term cooperation in these areas. Companies will gain greater access to cutting edge research and scientific talent when corporate R&D budgets are being cut. Universities will gain much-needed financial support and partners in research.
